Upgrading a newbuild solar system to make it efficient and future proof
Dawlish solar upgrade with battery storage (2.0kW in-roof system)
An upgrade to an existing new-build solar setup, designed to maximise a small roof and help the client use more of their own energy.
The original system had just three small panels and a basic inverter installed in the loft. During our visit we found the inverter running extremely hot, which can affect performance and lifespan in poorly ventilated spaces. The client also wanted battery storage to reduce reliance on the grid.
Our Solution
Upgraded to 4 × 500W panels (2.0 kW total) using a GSE in-roof system for a neat, integrated finish
Installed a SolaX hybrid inverter + 5.12 kWh stackable battery for smarter energy use and future expansion
Relocated the inverter to a well-ventilated outdoor position for improved reliability
Added WiFi monitoring via the SolaX app
Results
Performance
Dramatically higher generation compared with the original small system, while working with limited roof space
Energy independence
Battery storage added, allowing the client to use more of their own solar energy later in the day and reduce grid reliance
Reliability
Inverter moved from an overheated loft environment to a cooler, better-ventilated location, supporting more stable operation and improved longevity
Aesthetics
Low-profile, integrated in-roof finish that looks tidy and discreet
Future-ready
System is designed with simple battery expansion if the client wants increased storage later on
